For a party that you are hosting to be as fun as possible you need to put some thought into the type of entertainment that you will provide. Music is, of course, essential. You cannot just play any music though. A mistake many people make is to just play their favorite CDs from their collection. Remember that your party is not just for you, so you need to play music that will appeal to as many of your guests as possible. If you have some spare cash available, you might also want to consider hiring a band or a DJ to perform.

While having music at your party is important, it may well not be enough to keep your guests entertained for the whole evening. Hiring a comedian or magician is certainly something to consider. You can probably hire a decent one for a couple of hours for around $100. There should be at least a few performers in your town to do such a gig. If you are not sure who to contact, ask for recommendations from friends, look in the phonebook or search online.

For the early stages of a party, getting out some games or having a quiz tends to be popular. People will not want to sit down and play Monopoly or Risk for hours, but playing poker for small change or having a ‘name that tune’ competition are perfect. This is an especially good idea if the people attending the party are not really familiar with each other, as they will have something to talk about which will break the ice.

If you have a garden to make use of for your party, then it would be a shame not to use it, right? You could buy some fireworks and have a little display. It does not matter if it is the traditional time to use fireworks or not. It will actually be better if you use them ‘out of season’ because it will be more of a surprise for your guests. A small barbecue is a good idea too. Light it up and leave some burgers and sausages next to it and you can let people cook for themselves if they are hungry.

Whichever types of entertainment that you opt for, remember to not over do it, as people appreciate having lots of time to kick back and do nothing too. Some people will actually prefer to just talk all-night rather than be entertained – you need to keep that in mind and not make people get involved in things that they do not want to be involved in.
