Most men have at least a few dress shirts hanging in the closet. These shirts should fit into one of three styles:

Athletic Fit – This style has been growing in popularity over the last several years. With its sleeker fit, it gives the wearer a very urban look and a more contemporary style. Most companies sell these sharply tapering shirts as “slim-fit”, and though originally found in the nightclub scene, they have become increasing popular as a replacement for the more traditional business shirt, especially with men who are more slightly built. These shirts have long been a popular part of such clothing lines as Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss, but can also be found in today’s market in such chain retailers as Banana Republic and Superdry.

Modern Fit – As the name suggests modern fit shirts are a more current fashion style. They are great for formal events or at the office, and also ideal for clubbing and fine dining at restaurants. It is a tapered shirt in what is commonly known as the “semi-fitted” style, it looks especially good on men with average builds, who are not very skinny but the not overweight either. This style of shirt is rising quickly in popularity and lends a smooth, strong outline to the body. It is often preferred by young professionals.

Classic Fit – This is the most commonplace style of men’s shirt you can find. It rarely has any taper to it and is much roomier, making it perfect for men with average to large builds. Most department stores and clothing retail outlets sell these, though they are starting to diminish in popularity as the modern fit becomes more popular. The classic fit used to be the shirt of menswear outlets and designer brands, but you can find it even at discount departments stores and the like these days. However, the look is still “classic”, and it works well for men who are larger or taller or just want to maintain a more formal business look.

If you are having a tough time deciding which style of shirt looks best on you, then go with the classic fit, which looks good on any body type. Do not be afraid to try on one of the other styles though – it is always good to experiment and you may find out that they suit you better.
